We have all been there. The headaches, the sniffling, and the coughing that keeps you up at night. On top of that, you don’t even dare go to the pharmacy, because at the slightest sign of coughing, you can hear people screaming COVID in their heads. Are they calling the health department on you?!

Not that the drugs at the store are worth the trip. They may suppress your cough, but you won’t be doing your body any favors. You see, coughing is actually beneficial. It is your body’s mechanism to get rid of something that’s irritating your breathing channels.

What you want to do for curing a cough fast is help your body expel the irritants naturally.

Secret Ingredients for Instant Cough Relief

Before you read the ingredients, you should know that this is a powerful cough remedy that will:

  • Open up your airways
  • Relieve your congestion headache
  • Soothe your sore throat
  • Clear mucus from your lungs

You can even use it to supercharge your immune system and prevent catching a cold!

My family has used this homemade cough remedy to cure all sorts of breathing-related ailments, like:

  • Dry coughs
  • Wet coughs
  • Bronchitis
  • Sinusitis

Here’s why I asked you to wait before reading the recipe

The essential ingredients for this homemade cough syrup are:

  • Red Onion: It’s a natural immune booster that fights viruses, bacteria, and regulates histamine levels
  • Aloe Vera: Soothes the throat, has natural anti-inflammatory properties
  • Honey: Coats the throat, it’s a natural antibiotic, and improves taste

It sounds disgusting at best, but I promise the honey works wonders. Besides, there are other beneficial ingredients you can add to boost the taste.

Your brain is probably shouting, “why would I do this to my taste buds?” Because, this is as good as it gets for getting rid of a cough naturally, quickly, and effectively.

A Palate for More Cough Healing Properties

For even more cough healing benefits and taste improvement, try adding:

  • Lemon: It gives an extra boost of Vitamin C and conceals the onion taste
  • Ginger: A powerful expectorant sure to clear your throat and nose within seconds
  • Berry juice: If your children are too young to have honey, this will go a long way to make it tasty

Questions I’ve gotten about this cough remedy:

How often should I take it?

The optimal dose is 3 tablespoons, 3 times a day. You can take it every day until the cough recedes and then take it once every 3 days.

For how long should I take it?

For best results, take the full dose for 5 days, then reduce the dose gradually. For unrelenting coughs, take for up to 3 weeks.

How long is it good for?

You can keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days. After that, the cough healing properties start to vanish. You can also pour it into ice cube trays and freeze for up to 3 months.

Can you substitute for another onion?

Yes! Any onion will do the trick if you don’t have red ones at hand. We use red onion because it has unique properties and find it more palatable.

Will the aloe make it slimy?

EW, no! You would never know it’s there. It blends smoothly with the rest of the ingredients and does not add any flavor.
